Banned USE of Non-Mineral Sunscreens
Most of you have probably heard that Maui County has put a ban on the sales of all non-mineral sunscreens as of October 1, 2022. Hawaii County also instituted an October 1 ban, while the rest of the state will implement it in January 2023.
But read the ordinance and you’ll also discover that the use of any chemical sunscreen is also banned. Literally, if you are using a sunscreen you brought from the mainland, you could be cited.
No one is sure how that is going to play out, but there has been an alternative for more than 30 years. Absolutely Natural was the world’s first all-natural, mineral sunscreen and has been sold on the decks of the best hotels since 1992. And, it has always used 100% minerals for sunscreen (non-nano) as well as other natural ingredients.
So, look for our complete line of sunscreens, oils and after sun products at your resorts or better yet, order in advance and make sure you have the original reef saver with you. To that end we are running a limited time offer where you will receive 10% off sun care kits for 2 days only!
Be cautious: A lot of sunscreen companies are scrambling to meet the qualifications of being allowed to sell on Maui BUT a lot are also “cheating the system” (my opinion). They are using less mineral sunscreen while using chemical boosters to get the SPF rating of a 30 or a 50. These boosters are problematic just like sunscreens. In fact, they are often described as sunscreens that were just never officially approved by the FDA.
Below is the ordinance. Search for Ordinance 5306 if you are interested in the entire bill.

Mineral Only Sunscreen Maui County
Because chemicals in some sunscreens can wash off our bodies and harm coral and other marine life, the County of Maui passed Ordinance No. 5306 that bans the sale, distribution and use of non-mineral sunscreens without a prescription.
Starting on October 1, 2022, only mineral sunscreens will be allowed in the County.
To help protect Maui County reefs, choose only mineral sunscreens made with ‘non-nanotized’ zinc oxide or titanium dioxide—natural mineral ingredients.
Hawai’i is one of the most isolated archipelagos on earth and our coral reefs are home to unique marine life found nowhere else on the planet.
Here in Maui County, reefs are not only extremely important habitats, they are fundamental to the marine economy. Coral reefs also provide us with places for recreation and longstanding Hawaiian cultural practices. Reefs buffer us against waves, storms and floods which helps prevent property damage, erosion and loss of life.
