Safety First
The substance Frankincense may be familiar to you because it has been used for centuries. There are several types of Frankincense available, varying by tree species and chemical components. One slightly confusing aspect of Frankincense is a lingering confusion about the species of tree used as the source for its essential oil. Most consider Boswellia carterii and Boswellia sacra as the same plant, but a few disagree. What matters most is the composition of the oil, ensuring that the beneficial components are present in the blend. Absolutely Natural uses only organic, sustainably sourced Frankincense essential oil from Somaliland. Because the chemical components are responsible for the positive effects, each batch of Frankincense essential oil used in Kinsley products is checked for the presence and amounts of beneficial components. All the components together create its distinctive woodsy scent, but the oil must contain α-pinene, ß-myrcene and d-limonene to convey its beneficial effects.
Frankincense essential oil is regarded as safe and can have a shelf life of up to three years if it is stored in a sealed container ideally in a cool, dark place. If it has oxidized and turned rancid, it can cause skin sensitization. Ensure that Frankincense essential oil and products containing this oil have the same pleasant scent as when you first received the bottle!
How Does It Work
Frankincense essential oil is steam-distilled from the resin of the Boswellia tree. The resin naturally hardens when the tree is wounded, forming a protective layer. This resin contains a complex blend of aromatic compounds, including monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, which give the oil its distinctive warm, woody, and slightly citrusy aroma.
Its composition makes it a versatile ingredient in aromatherapy, skincare, and personal care formulations, contributing both fragrance and a grounding, resinous character. Frankincense essential oil can also blend harmoniously with other oils, adding depth and complexity.

Fun Fact
Frankincense has been treasured for thousands of years, often used in ceremonies, rituals, and perfumery. The resin is carefully harvested from the Boswellia tree by making small cuts in the bark, allowing the sap to ooze out and harden into “tears.” Steam distillation of these resin tears produces the essential oil, capturing its warm, woody, and slightly citrusy aroma that has been valued across cultures for centuries.
