Although there are some medical conditions, like psoriasis and eczema, where dry, itchy skin is a by product of the disease, most of us with dry skin are victims of the environment.

Normal, healthy skin is coated in a thin layer of lipids or fatty substances which retain moisture and leaves skin soft and supple.  Our environment can wreak havoc on your skin and can strip the skin of those important fatty oils.

Patches of dry skin can occur anywhere but are most common on the arms, hands, lower legs, and abdomen.

It is important to treat dry skin as ignoring the problem can lead to dermatitis (inflammation of the skin)) swelling and infections.

Dry air is the most common cause of dry skin especially during the winter.  It draws the moisture right out of our skin and exposure to central heat is the most damaging.  Other aspects of winter are nearly as bad for your skin … low humidity, bitter cold and winds.

One cause for dry skin may surprise you.  Taking long, hot showers can wash away the natural oils that protect your skin. If your skin feels tight when you finish with your shower, then you have dry skin.

Experts recommend a short shower (just a few minutes) using lukewarm water.  For some, that may seem like a sacrifice but in the long run, it will pay off.

Soap can also be a culprit.  Bar soaps can wash away your skin’s protective oils and we use way too much of it when we shower. And, we often choose the wrong soap.  Deodorant and antimicrobial soaps are too harsh and there are other alternatives.  For example, Natural shower gels will clean more effectively than soap without stripping precious oils.

Some medications also can cause dry skin.  This includes high blood pressure medicine, diuretics, and a lot of acne treatments.

The results were incredible.  He now has virtually no break outs and has healthy, young looking skin.  He was so impressed he joined our team 10 years ago.

So, dry skin can be annoying at least but may lead to worsening conditions if untreated.  Absolutely Natural has answers for you.
