If you use traditional soaps or shampoos, body washes or toothpaste or a myriad of other personal care products, you are exposed to Triclosan.

Triclosan is a harsh chemical used in all the aforementioned products as an anti-bacterial agent.

Sounds good, huh?

There are many problems.  There is mounting scientific evidence documenting adverse health effects from exposure to the chemical.  These include disruption of the thyroid hormone, skin irritation, endocrine disruption, bacterial and compounded antibiotic resistance. The chemical has been found in breast milk, blood and urine in human studies. There are ongoing studies looking at how Triclosan adversely affects estrogen.

In addition, Triclosan is horrible for the environment. . It is highly toxic to various types of algae and has the potential to affect the structure of algal communities, particularly when they occur downstream of wastewater treatment plants. Triclosan has been discovered in multiple organisms, including algae aquatic black worms, fish and dolphins. It has also been detected in land animals.

Several countries and U.S. states have banned the use of Triclosan and Canada has declared it to be toxic to the environment.  The FDA is taking a second look at the chemical.

And, the irony is that this dangerous, dangerous chemical may not be all that effective. For example the FDA studies have determined no evidence that Triclosan in antibacterial soaps and body washes provides any benefit over washing with regular soap and water.

There are natural alternatives such as anti-bacterial raw ingredients like Cranberry, Calendula and Green Tea.  Of course, Absolutely Natural has never used Triclosan and remains at the forefront bringing you safe, effective products.
